Add A User Account To Your Windows Home Server

Add user account to your WHS.

In order for you and your family to enjoy the functions and features of your WHS you will need to add user accounts for them to access the server’s resources. This will require you to set up a user/password on their computer and a matching user/password on the server. By default the server requires a strong password which consists of eight characters in length and three of the following: UPPERCASE, lowercase, numbers, and special characters. The special characters are limited to the characters on the top row of your keyboard.

Start by opening the WHS 2011 Dashboard application. Select the User tab and click on the Add a user account wizard on the right side of the DB.

This opens the Add a User Account wizard. Now complete the hi-lighted fields and click next. The information for the user account you create must match the account information on your client computers.

This brings us to the screen where you get to determine the level of access a WHS user has to your WHS Shares. The options include: No Access, Read Only, and Read/Write. Remember, if you grant somebody R/W access, they can also delete any file in the shared folder they have access.

The next screen will determine if the user is granted Remote Access to your home server, and to what resources they can access remotely. For a more complete explanation of this feature, click on the ‘What is Remote Web Access?’ link at the bottom of the dialog box. Click the ‘Create account’ button to continue.

That’s all there is to creating a user account on your WHS 2011 home server.

Repeat this process for any additional accounts you wish to create. You may create up to 10 user accounts.

The elegant downtown restaurant is offering diners an opportunity to share a meal with family and friends around the world, using video-conferencing technology to connect people through the Internet over dinner or lunch.

At the same time, owner Felipe Gomes announced yesterday he will open a new lounge in his wine cellar and start offering horse-drawn carriage rides from the restaurant to Victoria Park this weekend.

“I really look to the past and the future,” said Gomes. “It is an opportunity to not just make sure the kitchen is performing well, or the food is presented well, but it is also my desire to create and share new experiences.”

The video technology is certainly new, unlike anything being done in the restaurant business today, said Gomes. He has taken one private room, used for functions, and installed a projector and screen linked to a computer and webcam.

Using Skype software, which can be downloaded free, diners in the room will be able to enjoy a meal while on the screen they will see and be able to speak with family or friends in a home anywhere in the world, as long as they also have Skype software and a computer and video card capable of handling that technology, and a webcam on their end.

“We are taking London to the world, with a dining experience,” said Gomes.

In fact, to demonstrate the new technology, Gomes linked to his sister in Portugal yesterday, literally dining with her over lunch, while never leaving London.

The idea was born when Rick Pinheiro, partner in PrimeWeb, a London technology business, celebrated his parents’ 40th wedding anniversary in March by connecting with family members in Vancouver, who set up a webcam in their home. Both families dined at the same time and they saw and spoke to each other over dinner.

“It was flawless,” Pinheiro said of the evening. “We all enjoyed it immensely. My brother (in Vancouver) was joking around with me about what I was ordering. I have never experienced webcam like I did that day.”

But Gomes is also excited about the wine cellar, having taken an old, boarded-up storage room and converted it into an intimate lounge that will seat 60 and will feature wines from around the world, he said.

“This wine cellar is Portugal, it is my heritage, it is my father sending me to the cellar to get a bottle of wine when I was a boy,” said Gomes. “Many times in London we want something different to finish the evening — a glass of wine and conversation, that is what this cellar will do.”

CITY HALL: Fontana spends office budget money to create own, more nimble website

By PATRICK MALONEY, THE LONDON FREE PRESS

Last Updated: January 26, 2012 7:36am

Joe Fontana may love London — but london.ca? Well, that’s another matter entirely.

Irked with the perceived limitations of city hall’s website, Fontana has launched a new mayoral site that’s at a distinct remove from London’s official web presence and paid for by his office’s expanded budget for community engagement.

“I got so frustrated, I said I’m doing my own,” Fontana said. “I think you’ve heard me on many occasions talk about how antiquated our technology platform is, so I got frustrated.”

The new website, mayorfontana.ca, is built and maintained by a pair of private firms that were involved in Fontana’s 2010 campaign. The mayor is defending the move as crucial for getting information out to Londoners.

“(I’m) determined to make sure I as mayor could do what I needed to do — and that’s to make sure that if I had an announcement to make, if I was doing something and wanted to inform Londoners tomorrow, I could do it,” he said, adding: “it was taking me weeks to put something up on the city website.”

The new site, launched just weeks ago, is run by Susan McElroy & Associates, a communications outfit, and the local Internet company PrimeWeb. Both were involved in Fontana’s 2010 mayoral campaign.

McElroy has been on contract to the mayor’s office to handle communications work, including such projects as Fontana’s online town hall meetings. She declined comment on the website, citing client confidentiality.

Raphael Metron, an owner of PrimeWeb, said he believes the website allows Fontana to reach out to Londoners more quickly.

“It’s an opportunity for him to chat a little more personally” with citizens, Metron said.

Metron declined to say what it cost to build the website. One local web developer estimated they’d charge $5,000 to $7,000 to create such a site.

The cost was covered in the 2011 mayor’s office budget that was infused with $30,000 in one-time funding to help Fontana cover community-engagement efforts.

That budget is set for $50,000 in 2012 after a request from Fontana was endorsed in principle during a recent budget debate. Only a small amount of that new money will go to maintaining the website — $100 or $200 a month, the mayor said.

Public-relations help is vital, Fontana said, noting the city’s six-person communications team works for the City of London, not the politicians.

Fontana makes no apologies for taking the unusual step of establishing an independent website.

“I’ve done a lot of things that are different than before. Why? Because I wanted to make sure I could do things as quickly as possible.”

The long-standing mayor’s page at london.ca, meanwhile, will remain active, staff say.

Setup Your Personalized Google Apps Suite

Google Apps Description Video

Google provides a powerful suite of web applications ranging from email and calendar to documents, chat and sites [and so much more]. For web professionals, the typical “@gmail.com” just won’t do. Thankfully, Google offers a professional version (called Google Apps) for professionals, educators, non-profits and government.

The Google Apps Standard version is the version we’ll walk through setting up and customizing to use the power of Google with our own branding. We’ll be setting up our custom domain, branding and checking out the advantages of getting yourself setup with Google Apps.

Google Apps

Google Apps is essentially the same services as the traditional Google services most of you are already familiar with. The advantage of it, however, is the additional advanced features and customization capabilities as well as better support, uptime reliability and storage. Some of these additional features come at a price though. You’ll pay $50 per user account if you want guaranteed uptime, support, better security and increased storage.

Google Apps

For many of us, Gmail and the other standard applications Google offers has been more than stable enough so I’ll only demonstrate setting up the Standard version of Google Apps, which is 100% FREE.

Google Apps Standard

The Standard Edition is limited to 50 additional user accounts. If you plan on providing accounts for users and will exceed this, you’ll need to sign up for the Premier Edition.

Your Domain and Sign Up

The primary advantage to setting up Google Apps Standard edition for many of you, will be the custom domain name and ability to create additional users within your domain. If you’ve already registered a domain name of your liking, head over to the sign up for Google Apps [Standard]. If you haven’t registered a domain yet, you can do so via the signup form.

Google Apps Sign Up

Fill out your administrator and organization information. Don’t worry, your organization can be a one man (or woman) team.

Sign Up Information

Next, you’ll create an administrator account and accept the terms and conditions (only if you agree to them!).

Create Admin Account

Verify Your Domain

You’ll need to verify that you own the domain you’ve signed up to use. You can do this by changing a CNAME record with your domain host or by uploading an HTML file. I always use the CNAME method but if you’re not familiar as to how that is done, uploading an HTML file will be easier for you.

Verify Ownership

I’ll be selecting the CNAME method for no other reason than I prefer that there isn’t a “random” HTML file sitting in my public web space.

Change CNAME

Here I’ve added the CNAME record and verified the record exists via the link shown in the previous screenshot.

CNAME Record

_________________________________________________

The verify methods have been changed a bit and might look more similar to this…

At this point you would add the TXT entry into your DNS record (either directly on your domain name registrar or host provider). Contact PrimeWeb if you have issues!)

_________________________________________________________________

Once you’ve completed these steps, you’ll be asked if you want to go through the setup guide. This is new to me but you may find it useful. I’ll demonstrate activating the primary services and customizing them for a unique URL.

If you aren’t comfortable with editing CNAME or MX records, contact your web host with the necessary information (maybe including a link to this How-To) and they should be able to set things up for you.

Activate Your Services

The page you should see at this point is your Google Apps Dashboard. From here you can manage your domain, users, settings, etc.

Google Apps Dashboard

If any of the services you would like to use aren’t already activated, go ahead and activate them. In this case, Email is currently not active so I’ll turn that on by clicking the “Activate email” link. The reason Email isn’t already active is because you’ll need to change the Mail Exchange records with your domain host. Mail Exchange (MX) records determine your email routing.

Please note that if you already have email setup through your domain, this will effect it. Once setup, you’re email will be accessible via your Google Apps account.

Setup Email

MX Records

Farther down the page you’ll see a list of MX Server addresses and their related priority. This is the information we’ll need to use when editing our MX records with our domain host.

MX Editing

Here I’ve entered the three MX records for the 10, 20 and 30 priority levels (you don’t need more than that — my host actually deletes them).Once you’ve completed those steps, Google will check your MX records which could take up to 48 hours (usually finishes in less than one hour for me) and Email will be activated.

DNS and MX record changes can take time to take effect. Try to be patient and give Google Apps a little time to activate your services.

Customize Your URLs

You may have noticed you’re given some relatively ugly standard URLs for your services. These are not user friendly and you won’t want to memorize these or type them very often. So we’ll go ahead and customize them to our liking.

Ugly URLs

Start by clicking the title of the service you would like to customize the URL for. You’ll be taken to that service’s settings page where you’ll be able to customize its URL (among other settings).

Calendar Settings

Click “Change URL” and enter the custom subdomain you would like to use. For this example, I’ll use “cal.xmdsys.com” as it’s short and easy. Continue to the next step where you’ll be given information on changing the necessary CNAME record with your web host. This follows the same steps as used before.

Custom URL CNAME

To speed up this process, you can enter all of the CNAME records you plan on using ahead of time then change the settings within Google Apps.

All Services CNAMEs

Now you’ll be able to access all these services via your custom URL with the power of Google behind you! (The email service will display its custom URL once Google has finished activating it.)

Custom URLs

Brand Yourself

Whether you plan on providing accounts for others on your domain or not, you may want to personalize your account even further. Others may not see this but it does add to your professionalism if they do, and let’s face it — customizing our accounts with our personal branding is actually kinda fun (maybe just me?).

Visit the Domain settings page and click the Appearance tab. From here you can upload a custom logo and customize the sign-in box colors. It’s not much, but every little bit counts.

Custom Branding

Custom Logo

I’ve uploaded a rather bland, basic logo for demonstration purposes. This is the logo that will be displayed in place of the Google logo in your (and your users) email, documents, sites and calendar accounts.

Final Thoughts

If you aren’t familiar with CNAME and MX records or how to change those with your domain host, this might be a little bit of a challenge. Don’t let it scare you away though, your hosting provider should be able to help you get this all setup.

For those of you involved in organizations larger than one or two people, Google Apps can be a real life-saver. You get the power of familiar services like Gmail with professional URLs specific to your organization and a touch of branding. The additional features and flexibility alone are worth the time needed to set this up.

If you’re a one man team, this might still be a great move to make over the traditional Gmail service and other standard Google services. When I give people my custom email address, I get noticeably different reactions as it appears much more professional. However, Gmail is my preferred email service so the combination of customizability and the power of Google, this is a must-have for me.

Small Businesses

The last point I’d like to make about Google Apps is for those of you who run small businesses. As a web developer, I’ve had many clients who want a self-hosted email solution. It takes a lot of convincing but those who I’ve convinced to make the switch to Google Apps have thanked me time and time again. They’ve never been happier and they no longer worry about uptime or other problems that come with self-hosted solutions.

Raph note: Do not go less than 5 minutes in frequency! If the time is too short and the servers haven’t finished communicating to your computer, the pop server can error out and cause you bigger issues!!

How do I make Windows Live Mail leave a copy of my messages on the server?

With Windows Live Mail, it’s possible to leave a copy of each message on the mail server after you read it.

You’ll want to do this if you read e-mail in Windows Live Mail and another program (or our Webmail system). If you don’t set up Windows Live Mail to leave your messages on the server, it will delete the messages as soon as it connects to read mail, and the other program (or Webmail) won’t be able to see the messages.

You can also do this if you want your old incoming mail to be permanently stored in our backup system (see “E-mail backups” on our backup policy page for more details).

This page explains how to set up Windows Live Mail to leave a copy of each message on the server. It assumes that you have already followed the basic instructions to set up Windows Live Mail. It also assumes that you have a POP mailbox, since IMAP mailboxes do not require this sort of setting.

Changing the Windows Live Mail settings
To leave messages on the server, you will:

Open the Advanced settings window for your mail account
Check the “Leave a copy of messages on server” checkbox
1. Start the Windows Live Mail program.
Start Windows Live Mail via the Start button or other link.

When Windows Live Mail opens, click Tools, then Accounts from the menu bar. (If the program’s menu bar is not visible, hold down the Alt key and press the letter T, then release both keys.)

2. The “Accounts” window appears.
Highlight the e-mail account you wish to change and click Properties.

The “Properties” window appears:

You should not need to change any of the settings on the General tab.

3. Set the advanced properties.
Click the Advanced tab, then check the Leave a copy of messages on server checkbox.

To make sure copies of every message don’t stay on the server forever (which can slow down your mail connections and use up your disk space allowance), we also recommend checking the box marked “Remove from server after X days”. Choose a number of days that’s long enough that you’ll be able to read the messages in your other mail program (or Webmail).

The “Remove from server when deleted from ‘Deleted Items’” checkbox controls whether an email that you delete from your computer will also get deleted from the server before the number of days specified above is reached. If you check the checkbox, then messages deleted from your computer will always be deleted from the server. If you do not check the checkbox, then messages deleted from your computer will not be deleted from the server until the specified number of days has passed (assuming that the “Remove from server after X days” checkbox is checked).

4. Close the setup windows.
Click OK to close the “Properties” window, then click Close to close the “Accounts” window.

Windows Live Mail configuration is complete
You’re finished! From now on, any mail that arrives should stay on the server, and you should be able to see it in your other mail program or Webmail. (If you’re using another mail program, you’ll probably want to setup that program to leave a copy of your messages on the server, too.)
